Intrinsic respect as a basis for Respect for persons
Intrinsic respect also known as innate or fundamental respect, is not conditional. There are no set expectations that are supposed to determine whether one is accorded respect or not. Respect is supposed to be internalized as a trait of the person according it. People are expected to apply the Golden Rule (GR) which states that, we should do to others what we expect others to do unto us (Burgess, 2013). On the other hand, deontological ethics are based on what is permitted, forbidden or morally acceptable. It therefore falls under the theories of morality. This is characteristic of meritorious respect which can only be earned after the realization of set expectations in a given environment. In general, intrinsic respect is the basis for Respect For Persons (RFP) because it is Non-arbitrary, all-inclusive and indeed practical. People are supposed to be respective to others regardless of the society’s expectations (Burgess, 2013).
In engineering or computer science, the Golden Rule is applicable because engineers work as a team in most cases and as such there ought to be some degree of respect. Engineers are expected to respect each other intrinsically without condition as a norm. This will encourage motivation at the work place. However, meritorious respect is also applicable in this environment especially in the case of merit by individual engineers.
