Social engineering poses an increased direct threat to data security due to its nature of targeting the human aspect of information technology. The targeting of vulnerabilities linked to human channels through phishing attacks or ransomware aims to increase the success rates of this new trend (Hatfield 102). Consequently, the top social engineering challenges facing data security include:
The onset of increased social media usage across the globe leading to the narrowing down of victims into select groups that are specifically targeted. This, in turn, enables the phishing attack levels to be undetected hence increasing the likelihood of success. In this case, a small number of vulnerable individuals become targets, including older generations or those with little technological know-how (Krombholz, Hobel, Huber, & Weippl 116).
