The Attraction to Deviant Characters
For over a long time, audiences have been drawn to crime fiction and its deviant characters be it in books, films or movies. Often, we find ourselves rooting for the villain in a story always wanting him or her to win and we tend to become sad whenever they lose or are killed. Audiences are attracted to crime fiction and its deviant characters because the stories always have shock reveals and twists, the characters always have events that lead them to commit a crime, and they represent events that could take place in the actual world.
Readers are drawn to crime fiction because of the shock reveals and twists in these stories that make them interesting to read. Concerning this, Rankin affirms, “Crime fiction, after all, is famous for its shock reveals,” (Rankin). This implies that readers are attracted by the fact that this genre often presents events in a manner that the audience did not expect. This is evident in Vonnegut’s story Harrison Bergeron whereby the character Harrison is presented as a criminal after escaping from jail. Apparently, his plans of overthrowing the government led to his arrest and therefore he was regarded as a dangerous criminal. With this picture in mind, it is later shocking that later after encountering the real Harrison, the reader learns that he is just trying to break himself and others free from the a somewhat repressive society. In the story, he is shown stripping off his headphones and spectacles that were used to control him and during his encounter with the musicians, “Harrison stripped them of their handicaps too.” (Vonnegut). The realization that he was considered a criminal because of his extra intelligence is quite shocking and the reader is shortly relieved that he is now free. However, the author presents a twist in the story when Harrison and a ballerina he had chosen as the Empress are shot dead. This provides a shocking twist because for a moment, we expected that Harrison will not be caught and will instead help to free everyone forced to wear the handicaps. The same case is seen in O’Connor’s A Good Man is Hard to Find . This fact is event in the instance when the Misfit showed some glimpse of remorse that made us hope that he would spare the grandmother’s life. For instance, it is mentioned that, “His voice seemed about to crack and the grandmother’s head cleared for an instant,” (O’Connor). This action can be interpreted as remorse on the part of the Misfit and the grandmother hoped that her words had touched his heart to the extent of making him spare her life. However, in a shocking twist the Misfit kills the old woman just like the other members of her family. Such twists therefore make the stories interesting to the reader because it is difficult to guess the next move and therefore makes one look forward to reading more of the story.
