Blue-collar jobs refer to jobs that require manual labor, and the compensation is on an hourly basis. In most instances, the jobs are temporary. Rose highlighted numerous aspects of the experiences of blue-collar workers through a personal narrative. I agree with Rose’s suggestion that blue-collar workers deserve more appreciation for the skills of cognition that they bring to work that manifest in proper communication, productivity, efficiency, and the ability to solve problems (12) effectively.
Society often fails to give enough credit to blue-collar workers for their invested mental activity in the tasks that they perform. Rose explains that blue-collar skills require a lot of mind power to understand and implement. For example, proficiency in mathematics is considered a unit of measurement of cognitive ability. However, many people fail to consider mathematics in blue-collar applications. Some jobs require workers to interpret data and make calculations in their daily operations. In the same way, blue-collar workers need to have a profound, and sometimes deeper, knowledge and implementation of mathematics. Rose gives the example of a carpenter. He states that when the carpenter builds an object, a simple task such as measuring can involve more than recording the values. Indeed, it is a manifestation of problem-solving.
Blue-collar workers deserve more recognition because of the amount of skill that they need to understand a concept and implement it. Rose explains how there is a general notion that the many physical jobs do not need high levels of literacy and also highlights how people are unaware of a large amount of reading that is required in the blue-collar workspace.
