Is Machine Learning Inherently Faulty?
Machine learning refers to a wide range of computer programs or algorithms that perform various predictions based on data sets obtained from various human activities in sectors such as business. It entails equipping computers with the ability to automatically learn, predict, and improve on historical data (Nichols et al. 112). In other words, it is a branch of artificial intelligence that makes machines more intelligent and enables them to interact with new data with little or no human intervention. Recent advances in machine learning have achieved what can be said to be a human level of information extraction, semantic understanding, and in some instances, the capacity to detect abstract patterns with higher accuracy than humans. Building on the conventional techniques in statistical modeling, machine learning is emerging as a crucial tool in assisting humans with various operations due to the availability of vast volumes of data, advancements in algorithm designs, and significant growth in computational power (Nichols et al. 112). Several machine learning algorithms with the ability to mimic human actions, usually called models, are in use in various sectors today. The choice of a given model for a particular problem is influenced by the characteristics of data available in addition to the desired outcome. While machine learning is becoming one of the essential parts of modern technology and businesses, it has a number of inherent limitations that may curtail its usefulness. This paper discusses some of the risks associated with machine learning.
Computers are machines that have come with several benefits, including increased speeds of processing information, which have even exceeded the capacity of the human brain. Through computers, humans can automate several operations both in business and home settings, thus, making them an indispensable tool in the contemporary world (Plant 31). When it comes to machine learning, the term machine refers to a computer that can occur in different forms, including desktops, laptops, cell phones, watches, and calculators, among other devices. The book titled Zeros and ones: Digital women and the new technoculture by Plant Sadie states that;
“In the same vein of exponential miniaturization, the microprocessor was developed in early 1970, effectively putting all the solid-state circuits of a computer onto a single silicon chip. The screen migrated from the TV set to give the machine a monitor, and by the 1980s, what had once been vast room-size systems without windows on the world were desktop microprocessors.” p.34
The above quotation suggests that the new computer, since its discovery, has found several uses in various sectors, which indicates that machine learning and artificial intelligence are parts of advances that the computer as a machine is undergoing (Plant 34). While such advances are crucial, technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning possess some inherent limitations. Any machine, including a computer, cannot function fully without some form of human intervention.
