The stories of seeking refuge in other countries are not always pleasing. I have had an opportunity to read and watch numerous stories on the journeys of undocumented immigrants that are more tragic than pleasing. Over the past, African immigrants, determined to reach the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta even by swimming, had been attracting the attention of the media and some humanitarian groups. The attention has now shifted to the illegal immigrant on the southern border of the United States. The films Who is Dayani Cristal? (Silver) and Sin Nombre (Fukunaga) reveal some bone-chilling encounters that immigrants, most of whom are seeking the American dream, encounter while trying to sneak through the southern border. The tall steel wall erected by President Trump's administration makes the experience even worse. The film Who is Dayani Cristal? seeks to unravel the mystery surrounding the death of an anonymous border crosser with a tattoo on the chest bearing the name Dayani Cristal. Employing their expertise in the film industry, the producer of the film recreates the perceived path that the anonymous corpse followed before meeting untimely death in a place where no one would ever wish to die. The reconstruction also played s significant role in exposing the harsh conditions of the border crossing journey and larger numbers of border crossers determined to seek the American dream regardless of the dangers, some hanging on top of the train and going deep into the dangerous desert.
The least interesting part of the film is the part where forensic officers try to identify the decaying bodies of border crossers. The family members of the deceased present at the scenes make the story even more tragic. You would be very lucky to even have a body to carry home to bury, let alone survive the desert.
