Feature Story on Planned Parenthood Reaction to Texas' Senate Bill 8
Senate Bill 8 is a Texas abortion restriction law that limits the accessibility of abortion services. The bill came into effect on 1st September 2021 and threatened the rights of women to make their choices when it comes to maternal issues. Planned Parenthood (PP) is committed to providing information and services related to abortion as part of its pro-choice ideological foundations. Therefore, in reaction to the emerging wave of abortion restriction laws, PP has been involved in a series of actions as part of the concerted effort to block these legislations.
Emergency Request to Block Senate Bill 8
A few days before enacting the new Texas abortion laws, a coalition of abortion providers and advocates, in which PP was involved, filed an emergency request at the Supreme Court to block the before it took effect. In the motion, the coalition argued that if the Supreme Court did not intervene (PP), the State of Texas would be breaking the law because the new abortion laws undermined and the court ruling in Roe v. Wade. In this ruling, the court ruled that Texas could not ban abortion prior to viability. With its new legislation, Texas is doing what the court ruled against. Unfortunately, while this action by the coalition is commendable, it did not result in the desired outcomes because of inaction by the Supreme Court. As a result, the motion came into action on the stated date.
