Case Study: Network Printer Design for Universality at HP
Situation
The current situation is a product review meeting for the development of the latest product. Present at the meeting are the marketing manager, head of product, and the controller of the product division. The meeting aims to decide whether a universal power supply should be adopted for the next production of network laser prints called Rainbow. The problem, however, is that the team does not have sufficient quantifiable data to arrive at the adoption decision. The only figure is that a universal power supply will increase costs by $30 per unit. This figure alone is not sufficient to convince the management. This is an important problem because it narrows down how potentially transformation decisions can be made or rejected with insufficient evidence.
