In overall, I found the career fair very informative and helpful. I felt that it was a great honor for me to interact with industry professionals and to learn from their firsthand career experience. The pieces of information that the employers shared with the audience include the importance of having problem-solving skills, quantitative and statistical analysis skills, communication skills and creativity towards success in a finance career. As a finance major, the two pieces of information that I took home were problem-solving and communication skills. This essay will discuss two of these pieces of information, namely problem solving and communication skills.
First and foremost, the importance of problem-solving skills cannot be overstated. The finance career, in particular, involves constant evaluation and interpretation of numbers. The career also entails analyzing different situations based on a particular set of variables. One such common situation can be when a company needs to know strategies of improving financial performance and minimizing resource usage within a particular financial year. Finance majors must be well equipped to be able to evaluate such situations and provide a report on potential opportunities, industry trends and recommend strategies for improvement. Secondly, possession of communication skills is more of a pre-requisite for success in any career. In finance, the ability to effectively and clearly communicate financial analysis, findings and make logical conclusions is a critical component given that all finance-related positions require effective communication with fellow employees and clients. The complex financial data should be interpreted in a simplified language so it can be understood by key business stakeholders....
