The internet has transformed how people buy and sell products. It has not only improved the convenience and flexibility of purchasing but also increased the speed of delivery. Today, with a click of a button, customers can have their goods delivered at their doorstep. For example, Amazon.com offers same-day delivery for specific products. Recently, online shopping has increased as compared to the past decade. 27% of 7.8 billion global population are shopping online today. For example, in the United States, over 80% of people prefer to purchase products online, with 25% purchasing at least once a month (Saphores Jean-Daniel, and Lu Xu, np). This explains the extensive growth of online retailers such as Amazon, Walmart, and Alibaba.com, to mention a few. For instance, in 2019, Amazon.com recorded revenues of over $280 billion compared to $34.2 billion in 2010.
Online shopping offers consumers a wide selection of products, comparison in shopping, better prices, saving time, and resources. Despite the countless benefits of online shopping, many customers have been reluctant to buy their goods online. While some consumers have been concerned about the quality of online products and the security of personal information, others are apprehensive about the return of faulty products and delays in delivery. Research shows that 50% of people who do not buy online are afraid of their security of transactions, quality of products, and delayed delivery (Zhang, Tinting, et al np).
My decision to buy products, especially electronics, food, and groceries, did not come easy. Over the past years, I have been reluctant to purchase these products due to the fear of being deceived with substandard or contaminated foodstuffs.
