Violence and Redemption in The Film Parasite
Parasite is definitely one of the best movies of the decade. It has a certain relatable aspect to it, and its tragic ending helps viewers come to terms with the reality of life. We live in a capitalist world, and whether we like it or note we are divided into the haves, and the have nots. But what happens if the resentment between these two groups is too great that one can no longer tolerate the other. Most likely, its violence, as seen in the movie Parasite. This paper seeks to discuss violence and redemption in the film Parasite with a special focus on the movie’s climax.
The movie begins with the Ki-jung and Ki-woo moving about in their sub-basement house trying to get a Wi-Fi connection. This seems like an innocent aspect of daily life. However, it plays a key role in introducing the viewer to one side of the story that is Parasite. From this start, one begins to view the Kim family as the parasites being described by the movie title because they are trying to connect to a Wi-Fi network, which they do not even pay for. But this is not all there is to the movie.
When Ki-woo’s cooler and wealthier friend comes to visit him and his family, he gives him a landscape rock as a gift. Again, this is not just an ordinary scene in the movie. A majority of viewers would also recognize this. Even the way Kim Ki-taek marvels at the rock when his son brings it home goes a long way to telling us that it is not just an ordinary gift. There is a hidden message that Bong Joon-ho is trying to send as the movie starts, and later on, it becomes clear.
The film’s turning point is when a torrential rain begins pouring, and the Park family are forced to abandon their camping trip. However, the Kim family have already made themselves comfortable in the Parks’ home. Therefore, when the Parks arrive, the Kims are forced to hide in various places within the sitting room. When Park Dong-ik and his wife decide to sleep on the sitting room couch, this presents a moment of great tension and anxiety in the film. However, it also begins what eventually becomes the end of the parasite relationship between the Kims and the Parks. When Park Dong-ik mentions to his wife that he has noticed that Kim Ki-taek is often smelly, Kim Ki-taek, who is now hidden under the table and just a few steps from where Park Dong-ik and his wife are sleeping, cannot help but sniff himself to ascertain if indeed what Park Dong-ik is saying is true. At the same time, one can see the expression on Kim Ki-taek’s face. Although it is hard to discern, one can tell that he is not happy with how Park Dong-ik has described him.
When the Kims eventually manage to escape from the Parks’ home, they are forced to walk all the way down to their neighbourhood, and back to their sub-basement house under the torrential rain. This scene with heavy rain was foreshadowed earlier in the movie when Ki-woo was engaged in a fight with a drunk man outside their house, and he and his father ended up throwing water at the drunk man.
