The Mermaid is a marvel of first-rate animation, well-developed characters, witty songwriting, and vital planning. Directed and written by Ron Clements and John Musker, The Mermaid is based on Hans Christian Andersen's wistful story of a mermaid (Ariel) who is fascinated by the human world and falls in love with a human prince (Prince Eric). The rebellious Ariel defies her father's orders by getting into a pact with the sea witch (Ursula). The latter agrees to make her human (she is eager to meet the prince again in human form) but only if she gives up her beautiful singing voice as collateral. In three days, Ariel must secure a "kiss of true love" from her love interest or become Ursula’s captive. The film was the first to challenge fairy tale princesses' prim and reverent nature by creating a solid and rebellious character who is more proactive than preceding female Disney leads. While extolling a girl who risks everything for a man she just met is problematic, the fact that Ariel is independent and strong-willed makes it easy to sympathize with her scheme.
