HIGH MUSEUM OF ART
The destination for my field trip was the High Museum of Art. One of my classmates accompanied me to the museum. We travelled by bus to midtown. We were received by one of the workers who took us around explaining the architectural design and the cultural significance of the museum. We learned that the Museum is among the most significant art museums in Southeast. This is because it hosts over 11,000 permanent collections of objects that present arts done by 19th to 20th century American artists, 1825 t-1917 American decorative works, prints and paintings of popular European holdings, contemporary and modern arts collections, African art, photography and other works done by African American artists. The museum is dedicated to collecting objects done by artists from the South, folks as well as self-learned artists. Therefore, it is the most important icon in the area of art starting early 20th century.
The museum was founded in 1905 and was then known as Atlanta Art Association (Shaw Paragraph 3). It started operating officially in 1926 when the High family provided their Peachtree Street. The museum used the home to the time it was shifted to a closer by building following 1955. A catastrophic event happened and about 122 art patrons died in a plane crash on art tour to Europe motivated the formation of the 1962 Atlanta Arts Alliance to honor the victims. After 6 years, the High did an additional Memorial Center around the previous museum. The museum went on succeeding and grew fast following the next 10 years. Following 1979, Robert Woodruff provided $7.5 million for the construction of a bigger museum for the city. Together with local Georgians and art patrons, the High raised sufficient money to match Woodruff’s offer and surpass it by $12.5 million.
Architect Richard Meier designed a white postmodern building and curators started their construction work in 1981. But, we concurred with criticizers of this design who have suggested the building has only beauty with no brains. For instance, built using white concrete, the lobby, a big atrium that is at the center of the structure’s cutaway cube, has little exhibitions spacing. The columns across the interiors limit the manner any curator can show big work of contemporary arts. The atrium is among the 4 quadrants and is luxuriously built. The empty pathway taking one to the other exhibits appeared shameful when one looks at how the radiant as well as the light-filled room appears. The Stent Family wing being 135,000 f2, the structure provides space to about 3% of permanent collections (Goodman Paragraph 4). Though the building officially has 135,000 f2, about 52,000 f2 is reserved for the gallery which is not sufficient.
In 1983, the new building started operating and it was much space than the High’s prior home. It fast attained praise owing to its curved faзade thereby making Atlanta a landmark.
