Fences is a 2016 American period drama film. It was written by August Wilson and stars Denzel Washington, who also produced and directed it. The film is set in the 1950s and tells the story of Troy (Denzel Washington), a trash collector and a former baseball athlete, and his family's challenges. Although deeply flawed, Troy represents the struggles for fair treatment and justice in the 1950s. He also represents the reluctance to accept social change. The film has several dramatic scenes, each set in a different decade of the 20th century, and the struggles African Americans face. These themes and the entire plot are developed through setting, staging, costumes and acting.
The film is set in the 1950s and takes place in the front yard of Troy's ancient two-story house, built using bricks (Washington). The house is a source of pride for troy because he affords at least a house to live in with his family. The house is also a source of shame for Troy because the only way he can afford the house is through his mentally ill second world war veteran and the disability funding he receives. Therefore, the venue's setting communicates volumes about Troy's life, which the audience has not seen but can pre-empt.
The staging of the film also includes baseball and an incomplete fence. Troy was a baseball player who played the Negro Leagues only and was not allowed to the white teams. Black baseball players who succeeded are present in the film, including Robinson, which makes Try bitter. He was a good player, but he never received recognition.
