I agree with the residents of Pittsburgh, Atlanta, that artwork should be removed or painted over if residents find it offensive. One of the main roles of artwork should be to make people optimistic about the future (Linton, 7). In the modern world, where people face numerous challenges, artwork should serve the purpose of inspiring and giving people hope. Further, the main goal of art should be making the world a better place to live. It is unlikely that people will be offended by a piece of artwork if it exhibits the characteristics mentioned above. It is also important to note that artwork is made so that people can consume it. Therefore, if the people who are supposed to be the target audience of the artwork find it offensive in any way, then it is justifiable to either remove it or paint it over.
