The three primary types of memory in human information processing include sensory, short-term, and long-term memory. In particular, sensory memory retains impressions of the information being processed. The problem associated with sensory memory is that information is not retained for a long period. Indeed, it can be considered as a flash of light at night. The two potential solutions to increase information retention in sensory memory is by using haptic or echoic aspects (Rutishauser, Reddy, Mormann, & Sarnthein, 2021). In other words, auditory or visuals can be used to help people to remember information that is processed by sensory memory. Short-term memory can also be called working memory. Specifically, it holds a small amount of information for about twenty seconds. The best thing about short-term memory is that information can be passed to long-term through rehearsal. The main issue with short-term memory is that not all information processed is stored in long-term memory. As such, two potential solutions to solve the above problem are reciting information verbally and avoiding disruptions that can make one forget things quickly. Long-term memory is the one that holds information for an extended period. Everything that people learn in school is stored in long-term memory. However, it does not mean that people can retrieve all the information in long-term memory, which is its primary problem (Rutishauser, Reddy, Mormann, & Sarnthein, 2021). Some memories can last for many years, while others are forgotten as soon as they enter long-term memory.
