Liberty Challenged in Nineteenth Century America
The conflicting ideas on slavery in the United States resulted in the civil war and a negative impact on capitalism. While the southern regions wanted to expand slavery, the northern regions and some groups, including and not limited to the economist, did not support the idea. The latter groups presumed the negative impacts of slavery, such as the detriment of capitalism, but the south thought it was an excellent idea. The differing concepts resulted in civil war and compromise of capitalism, affecting the economic and political systems and status in the United States negatively.
3/5ths Compromise
It occurred in 1787. Malavasic (2014) states that the compromise between the Northern and Southern states’ delegates was an agreement to determine the apportioning of taxes on the slave population. Although the states had long differed on slaves’ issues, they could finally agree on the amount of taxes acquired from the demographic. The agreement resulted in two significant outcomes in the lives of the slave population. According to Malavasic (2014), it led to approval on slave states’ representation in the House of Representatives and counting three-fifths of the demographic to determine the amount of the direct taxes they should pay. The legislation was a great relief to the slave population.
Missouri Compromise of 1820
The passing of the legislation instated a substantial balance of power between the free and slave states. It was a significant turning point for the slaves since they acquired the power they previously could not access (Oakes, 2014). Malavasic (2014) claims that the legislation resulted in Missouri’s declaration, a slave state, and Maine a free state. The two states were added to the union to enact the balance of power. It also resulted in the division of the Louisiana territory into portions representing anti-slavery and slavery regions (Malavasic, 2014). The degree impacted the territory significantly during the implementation of the diving process.
Compromise of 1850
The legislation led to the enaction of five essential laws in the United States. Research by Malavasic (2014) shows that it minimized the tension between the free and slave states in America. The country gained substantial hope to eradicate the problems existing between the states whereby the free states held power and felt superior while the slave states lived in intimidation. The legislation led to introducing more and strict rules regarding the slaves (Malavasic, 2014). Although they were still enslaved, they did not have to endure oppression like before the legislation. It also resulted in the identification and acceptance of California in the union as a free state and identification of Utah and Mexico through power relating to slavery (Malavasic, 2014). This step created a significant hope for the slaves as they knew they had bills protecting them.
Kansas-Nebraska Act
The act was passed in 1854 to nullify the Missouri Compromise of 1820. The legislation of Kansas-Nebraska canceled the existence and implementation of the Missouri Compromise. The action yielded an imb...
