The institution of The National Health Service (NHS) was one of the biggest achievements of the Labour government in the UK in 1948. The NHS provided free medical treatment for all the citizens (Berridge 2009, 2).The establishment of the NHS was necessitated by the Second World War; owing to the war, there was need to provide care to several civilians who were injured. The state was forced to look after its citizen’s health. During the war, the public health service within the local governments provided health services but it was not adequate, with time the government was forced to establish a comprehensive medical care especially for millions of soldiers who were at war (The Independent 2015, 3). The World War II forced the government to come up with strategies to ensure that healthcare was given priority. In addition, after the Second World War politics also played a role in establishing the NHS as political priority changed. Several political parties were in consensus that among the post-war recovery was the welfare of its people (Gorsky 2008, 439).
The proposed Act to establish the National Health Service (NHS) received little dispute from politicians because the majority members of Parliament belonged to the labour party. The labour party believed that resources should be shared in an equitable way. (Ainsworth, S .2008, 5).The Beveridge report written in 1943 accelerated the institution process of NHS because it highlighted some of the serious issues facing Britain by then. The report became famous as it laid the foundation of how the welfare of British people in terms of health should be handled. (Hull Daily Mail 2015, 11). Initially, most people could not afford to pay medical because health care was in the hands of private individuals. People who could afford paid through insurance schemes. Churches and charities frequently helped by waiving costs. The government only paid for medical expenses for the military (The cabinet papers 1915-1986 2008, 5).
