Construction of Childhood: A Case Study on Kerry
Construction of Childhood
Childhood is a social construct characterized by society’s influences on children’s overall well-being. The characteristics and behavior of the children should not be solely based on the biological life stages. Instead, it should be viewed holistically as a combination of biological and psychosocial changes. This philosophy aids the adults in gaining control over the development of the children, allowing them to institutionalize and discredit their opinions and political contributions, and relegate them in public (Biddle, 2017).
Impact of Family, Community, and Societal Influence in the Construction of Childhood
Family. Guralnick (2006) discussed the three main types of family pattern interaction that influence childhood construction. First, the parent-child transactions are based on the daily exchanges or communication between the parent and the children. This is critical to the child’s development. Specifically, the parents’ sensitivity over the children’s reactions to certain situations must be observed, such that the parents should recognize the cues that determine the child’s emotional and intellectual capacity. Moreover, this influences the children’s dependence over the following years of their lives. Second, the family-orchestrated child experiences widen the children’s scope of familiarity by establishing family routines and recognizing the children’s roles in the family’s social network. Examples of this include play dates and bedtime story-telling. Lastly, the parental activities related to the children’s health and security affect their understanding of the world by introducing proper nutrition and proper handling of violence and aggression.
Community. Bell et al. (2020) found that the community activities and residents can decrease the physical vulnerability of the child with the following: 1) Denser residential area; 2) Construction of railway stations; 3) Increased parks and playrooms; 4) Presence of larger open green spaces from which the children can play. Conversely, larger home-yard spaces and traffic congestion are associated with higher chances of physical and social vulnerability.
Society. Different societies have specific constructs, which affect children’s development. This is secondary to the uniqueness in practices in each society. Furthermore, the old and contemporary societies also differ in philosophies due to the rapidly changing time and pace brought by innovations and other novelties. For instance, the time before industrialization does not require children to enter school. However, after this time, they became financially dependent on their parents and began enrolling in schools, which became the norm until today (Norozi and Moen, 2016).
