Positive and Negative Impacts of Notting Hill Carnival
The event is the largest street carnival in London every August bank holiday. The entire west London community participates in the occasion, with over one million residents and tourists joining the street party (Bowdin et al., 2011). The first Notting Hill festival was conducted in Trinidad in 1833 to commemorate the cessation of slavery in the Caribbean. In 1964, the activity began as an offshoot of the Trinidad Carnival to demonstrate various steel bands musicians performing in London each weekend (LA, 2011). The event has multiple positive impacts on the community, such as increasing incomes, visitors’ attraction, creating job opportunities, and elevating profits. Tourism provides employment opportunities through direct employment or revenue division among various industries such as transport, accommodation, and suppliers. The accommodation and transportation sectors located within Notting Hill region hire additional workers to cater to local and international visitors. Also, the activity improves business opportunities by providing a platform for the local communities to display their character hence attracting additional investors to expand business opportunities. Tourists spend their resources on various enterprises such as food, drinks, and accommodation used for community development. On the flip side, the event has negative impacts due to the large population gathering in one area leading to congestion, noise, overcrowding, and disruption of normal activities. Also, the event is associated with increased crime (BBC, 2013). For instance, the metropolitan police deduced that there were approximately 230 individuals during the event in 2012.
