The Apology and Euthyphro
The Apology is considered the most actual account preserved by Plato concerning Socrates defending himself before Athens' council. On the other hand, Euthyphro is a dialog between Euthyphro and Socrates about the most convenient statement that can define righteousness or a virtue in which one can fulfill their duty to humanity and gods. The conversation in Euthyphro relates to Socrates' fate charged for being impiety. During the discussion, the Athenian court determines his innocence or guilt of the crimes accused of a trial. The message of the Oracle in Apology was that Socrates was the wisest man among the Greeks. Socrates was puzzled by this message because he always thought of himself as one who knew nothing, making him investigate this message. Socrates comes upon the elenchus method or the Socratic Method as he explores the oracle's statement in the Apology, which also reflects in the Euthyphro.
Oracle’s Message in Apology
The message of the oracle in Apology was that Socrates was the wisest man among the Greeks. Socrates was puzzled by this message because he always thought of himself as one who knew nothing, thus prompting him to become a philosopher. Socrates decides to investigate Oracle’s announcement to ascertain its relevance even though the gods cannot lie. Socrates conducted a series of investigations and inquiries about people who were regarded as wise by the citizens or claimed to be wise themselves. Every time he questioned someone thought to be intelligent, he discovered that the reputation was ill-found and did not have the wisdom attribute. Among the people that Socrates asked who were considered wise were poets, politicians, and skilled artisans.
Socrates questioned a politician who was regarded as wise but after talking to him, and he realized the person was no intelligent as he claimed. Socrates points out to the politician that he lacks wisdom making the politician hate him. This hostility extended to the people who overheard the dialogue. This did not shake him, and he concluded that compared to the persons he questioned to determine their wisdom, he was better than all of them and knew nothing but claimed to have wisdom. Socrates claimed to know nothing, and he never thought that he knew anything; thus, the oracle was right when she claimed that Socrates was the wisest because he was conscious of his ignorance, something that the others were not.
The method that becomes evident in the oracle's message is the elenchus or Socratic Method method, which involves examination. The elenchus method aimed to determine what could not be true other than what was not right. This particular method is seen in other Socratic dialogues, such as the Euthyphro dialogue. According to Socrates, the Socratic method of analyzing what is right does not appear in the discussion and discourse setting with other people. This method involves Socrates questioning his interlocutor, basing the question on the definition of something. He asked the importance of various moral qualities, for example, justice and courage. Socrates claims to be ignorant and does not know anything. The person being examined gives out an answer that Socrates uses to determine whether the person is wise or not.
