Introduction
Over the past years, the amount of time spent by any given individual on the screen and social media has been on the rise. Screen time is the time that a person spends looking or using gadgets like television, computers, and phones. The various technological devices are used for multiple factors e.g., watching movies, playing games, music, learning, and for social purposes like chatting with friends. Social media, on the other hand, is the use of social platforms e.g., Twitter and Facebook, for various purposes like interaction with friends. Social media is also used for political and economic reasons. In the current world, a lot of time is used on screens and the use of social media.
Various technological inventions and innovations can be attributed to the current trends in the amount of time spent on screens and social media. For example, the trend in phones can be used to show how technology has influenced the increase in time used on screens and social media. In the past, phones were big such that they couldn't fit in the pockets. With time technology helped reduce their sizes to make it easy to carry around. That was till invention on the use of touch-screen phones. Now consumers want them big again since the bigger it is, the more fascinating it seems. Technology improvement has influenced the time spent on these gadgets.
The addiction to screens and social media has brought panic amongst communities. The reason is that it has been found to bring various social issues. For example, it can be viewed as a significant cause of the loss of morals among the people in today's society. It has also contributed to issues like antisocial behaviors, which are a significant cause of depression. The reason is that people, especially the youth, tend to spend more time on screens and social media rather than with real people. Despite the negative issues identified, there are still justifications as to why a lot of time is used on them.
Justification for spending a lot of time on screens and social media
* A cheap source of entertainment
Screens and social media are mostly used for entertainment purposes. Games, films, music, and social interactions are the most common forms of entertainment. It is the most common justification for spending a lot of time on screens and social media. The reason is that other ways are rather expensive and not available at the disposal of a person at all the time. For displays, you can entertain yourself any time you need to. Social media provides a different of entertainment, for example, where you get to learn how other people are doing and also get a chance to interact with them. It is a cheap way to get entertained. All you need is a screen e.g., T.V., switch on and watch a movie, or internet to surf your favorite social media platform. No additional costs since you're get entertained wherever you are. [Crystal Abidin, “Aren’t these just young, rich women doing vain things online?”: Influencer Selfies as Subversive Frivolty. 2010.]
