History 106 Paper Guidelines
Drawing upon lectures, class discussions, and your text books from this course, write a four to five-page paper summarizing what you have learned in this class. In your paper, you must, first, discuss the ways in which African Americans survived slavery and contributed to the economic and social development of the South and America, beginning with African and the African Slave trade. Second, discuss how African Americans survived the institution of slavery and Africanized the American South. Finally, discuss how they helped free themselves from slavery by 1865 and founded institutions such as Black colleges, churches, banks, insurance companies, fraternities and sororities to uplift their race.

Support your argument by citing specific examples from course lectures and readings in the class. by using Chicago Manual of Style or Turabian style footnotes. Include a works cited page. You cannot use any outside source materials.

Paper Format
Papers should be 4 to 5 pages in length with a clear thesis, introduction, body, conclusion, footnotes or endnotes, and a bibliography. Papers are to be typed, double-spaced, and written in clear concise prose. A typed rough draft of your paper should be completed at least one week prior to the due date.

Paper Components
Thesis
Your paper should have a thesis; a sentence that states the main point of the paper.

Introduction
Your introduction should tell the reader in brief what you are going to discuss in the body of your paper. It should indicate how the paper’s contents will be organized and developed.

Body
Using the paper’s thesis as a guide, plan the major sections of the paper’s body and make sure that each section relates directly to the paper’s thesis and logically to the other section(s) in the paper. Provide transitional elements (phrases, sentences, paragraphs) in the paper’s body to logically connect ideas, paragraphs, and sections.

Conclusion
Your paper’s conclusion should summarize the main points of the paper in much the same manner the introduction prepares the reader for what is to come.


Footnotes or Endnotes
Your paper should contain footnotes or endnotes which cite your sources. No parenthetical references (lecture, articles, textbook, and other materials). Failure to cite sources is plagiarism which will result in the grade of “F”

Bibliography
Your paper should have a bibliography which lists the names of sources consulted.

The institution of slavery had adverse effects on the development of African Americans. Black slaves did not enjoy the same rights and privileges as their white counterparts. They were seen as commodities that could be traded and misused. Blacks could not access to basic things like education. However, the end of slavery was a turning point for the majority of African Americans. Taking advantage of the freedom, the former slaves sought to enhance their social-economic status.
Ways in which African Americans survived slavery
African Americans had to devise ways of escaping from the shackles of slavery. Several factors enabled African Americans to survive slavery. Firstly, a crisis in the British Empire raised black hopes for freedom from slavery. From 1689, the British and French were involved in a series of wars. The British took measures to defeat the French. One of them was the passage of laws in the 1760s that a majority of Americans found to be oppressive. This gave rise to independence movements which gave an opportunity for the blacks to start uprisings against the oppressive structures.[Hine, Darlene Clark, William C. Additionally, the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, was a motivator for the blacks. Thomas Jefferson wrote, “that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” While Jefferson did not mean to support the blacks in the quest for freedom, the Deceleration of Independence to the blacks meant war against slavery. African Americans began to assert the need to uphold dignity for all human beings.[Ibid]
The culmination for freedom occurred in the Patriot cause. Blacks were willing to risk their lives for the cause. The move encouraged the northern legislatures to emancipate slaves within their boards. By the 1770s, some legislatures were accepting debates on abolition. Blacks continued to initiate lawsuits. At the same time, the Great Awakening and the Enlightenment encouraged the blacks to participate in the emerging market economy. More whites began to believe in the sanctity of private property. This gave an opportunity for sAfrican Americans to agitate for the abolishment of slavery.[Ibid]
The economic contribution of the blacks
The slavery system oppressed blacks. African Americans were sexually abused while men were constantly humiliated. The white masters usually rewarded the ladies who accepted to become their mistresses. However, those who refused to comply faced torture. Nonetheless, black men and women sought ways to rescue themselves from the bondage. The African Americans used various approaches like shrinking assigned work, escaping and rebelling.
