Decolonization aims to recreate the relationship between indigenous people and non-indigenous individuals. The goal is to terminate the negative impacts on the life and wellbeing of indigenous people due to the influence of ideologies, religions, governments, education systems, culture, and traditions. The first step of decolonizing Canada starts with acknowledging that the nation was built on the ground of colonialism. Indigenous people were displaced and the cultural systems destroyed, rendering them economically disadvantaged. There are many negative social and economic aspects that have affected indigenous people through the years. In contemporary Canadian society, indigenous people experience many inequalities and inequities. Therefore, decolonization is essential for enhancing equality and addressing the historical problems that emerged because of colonization.
Colonization occurred when white people migrated into Canada. They overtook the region and started to control the activities and ways of life of local people. As part of the process, they started to impose their laws, religion, policies, and values on the indigenous people. Important resources such as land, which was essential economic resources for the people. Therefore, due to these colonist activities, many indigenous people are struggling in the present day. Decolonization is essential because it is the only means to address past wrongs and ensure that indigenous people are able to enjoy equal rights.
