Comparing the Zeb Pilot House and Cradle to Cradle
A cradle to cradle design has a concept that was first developed during the 1990s which Professor Michael Braungart, William McDonough and EPA scientists from Hamburg had designed. The idea of cradle to cradle is exemplified in the Zeb Pilot House because there are glass entourages that exchange heat and redirects the excess heat to warm tap water which is an innovation compared to other houses. The swimming pool and shower are parts of the good design and this is another property of cradle to cradle.
In discussing the concept of cradle to cradle, it is nature-inspired so the products are made in accordance to the circular economy’s idea. This is what separates it from the usual co-efficiency concept. The Zeb Pilot house has solar cells, insulation, a roof slope, and a passive interior that is cannot be seen in traditional house designs. The tools and approaches used in making the design is eco-efficient that offers more sustainability that show how humans negatively affects the environment. The thermal mass is used for making temperature more predictable and stable.
There is a boiler constructed in the house for the purpose of getting heated water away from the solar collectors, a well, an air system, and then the heat goes to the recovery system. This means that the inside of the house will not get too hot even during the summer months. The cradle to cradle design also offers an equal economic, ecological and social benefits.
McDonough, et. al (2003) proposed that in the framework of C2C, it does not aim to be sustainable because in the industrial sector, it is understood as a strategy to do more with limited availability that will lessen the human footprint. The purpose of this is to minimize the disturbing symptoms of decline in the environment. Engineers see conventional sustainability a lot and this says a lot about retrofitting industry machines with better engines for more economic growth. The Zeb Pilot House project aims in keeping the qualities of a home through properties that cannot be altered. It provides comfort and better well-being, which is evident in the design process to meet the energy demands needed and this is only possible if more efficient engines are used in construction. And this is exactly what is being said earlier, that human footprint should not be minimized when designing a house.
The Zeb Pilot House use a photovoltaic system in the solar cells. Wang (2015) writes that it is the first in the world to be a fully integrated solar platform and first to get certified by C2C. There is a production of 19,200 kwh per year and the house requires a total of 7,272 kwh of electricity in a year. The underfloor heating system is efficient and this helps in saving energy, which is one of the main purposes of C2C.
