Design process
The philosophy of design process is an approach that gives individuals clarity and facilitates their work. The process allows one to understand the situation and the problem that needs to be solved and determine what the designed solution should do to solve the situation. The process takes the designers through a series of stages to prevent them from rotating around styles. It also enables them to shape their choices around what the client needs.
However, there are several design philosophies. Some of them are rigidly structured and are driven by rationalism while others are emotional and favor improvisation. Others rely on observation for them to work effectively. Some require the designers to work and collaborate with fellow designers. Some categorizes the process into seven stages, others six and others three. Some companies have created flowcharts that illustrate how the design process works.
One cannot say that a certain process is better than the others. Each has its place in the designers or situation that is being solved. The most important thing is that designers should employ a process that suits the clients and problem at hand and work on it instead of rotating around it. The design process share some similarities with other processes despite that it is different. The process is rational and logical but involves the intuition of the designers. It also requires a continuous communication between the designers and the clients and does not need them to perform some tasks which they are not trained for. It also does not assume that assumptions are right but begins with an intensive research, observation and interview/questioning to determine the suitable deliverables.
Certain design processes are easily understood theoretically but difficult to implement in practical terms. Every organization should choose its design process that should be applied and work well with designers whose desires are to provide solutions to critical problems. The process should evolve within the organization and applied on daily practices. The organizations should also experiment many approaches and learn from each of them and decide what works in their process. However, it is not easy to come with learnings from the several design approaches. It requires much time for an organization to sort out the approach that will be effective and requires more practice for it to become productive and successful. Finally the process will provide effective work for their clients.
