For this assignment, you will choose an 8-10 shot sequence from one of the films listed below and provide a shot-by-shot sequence breakdown followed by a short analysis. The sequence you will be discussing is short. However, the assignment is somewhat involved. Be sure to give yourself enough time to watch your chosen sequence repeatedly 

Part 1: Choose ONE of these films

• Sherlock Jr. (Keaton, 1924)
• Destiny (Lang, 1929)
• Man with a Movie Camera (Vertov, 1929)
• La Chute de la Maison Usher (Epstein, 1928)
• The Passion of Joan of Arc (Dreyer, 1928) 

Part 2: Preparation

First, view your chosen film and think about a sequence of shots that you find particularly appealing. Next, re-familiarize yourself with the techniques of film style by referring back to the film terminology we discussed at the beginning of the class. It will be helpful to keep the overall form of the film in mind as you work on the Shot Breakdown.

Part 3: Shot Breakdown

You will need to create a shot breakdown table (example provided on Blackboard) and prepare a schematic analysis of the sequence. Number the shots and note EACH one’s duration, scale, camera angle, camera movement, lighting setting, characters, staging or movement of the characters, props and any other aspects of the mise-en-scène and/or cinematography you deem salient. 

Part 4: Short Essay

Write a very, very short essay (approximately 400-600 words) in which you:

• Analyze the stylistic elements and visual motifs of the sequence (alternations repetitions, variations, rhyming effects, shots and staging that stand out for their singularity, etc);
• And integrate your observations into an argument, reflecting on the relationship between the narrative and stylistic organization of the sequence.

You will submit BOTH the Breakdown Chart and the essay. The essay should be double-spaced and in 12-point font. Include page numbers. And submit your work directly to the professor via email with the name of the document being “YOUR NAME_sequence analysis”
