Network sniffers analyze network traffic and underlying band use so that any trouble in the network is easily identifiable. Defensively, it maintains the networks and maintains its normal working. It captures packets, analyzes and records traffic, it decrypts packets and display them in clear text, it converts data to a readable format, and it shows relevant information such as server name, IP, host, and protocol. Network sniffing software varies in their functions (Durai, 2009). While some sniff and analyze hundreds of protocols, some only sniff a few. Most protocols that they analyze are such as IPX, TCP or IP, and DECNet. However, while these sniffers detect intrusion, hackers can use them as a snooping tool to monitor other computers.
