Introduction
Claude Shannon once said “I visualize a time when we will be to robots what dogs are to humans, and I’m rooting for the machines”. By the time Shannon uttered these words, he was only visualizing how things would be but this is slowly coming to pass. The major concern among people has been what is likely to happen to the numerous people whose jobs will be taken up by the machines (Epstein, 1999). While some people believe that there will always be a different kind of work for human beings to do, there are those who disagree about this point. This paper takes a critical look at CGP Gray’s video titled Humans Need Not Apply with a view to establish whether people need to be alarmed at the fast rate of automation or not. In this video titled Humans Need Not Apply, CGP Gray point out that numerous jobs that are performed by human beings will disappear in the coming days. Gray notes that the major reason for this is that computers and robots will be capable of doing these things in a faster and better way. Gray notes that even the current jobs like writing that seem to be a safe haven at the moment will soon be replaced by machines and that this in itself is good for the economy. Humans Need Not Apply gives the wrong impression that automation is good and that human beings should be prepared for this eventuality.
In his article, Gray notes that in the coming days machines will replace human labor completely, the opposite is actually true. Even though machines have taken over most of the roles played by human beings, it will be hard to completely obliterate human labor. The major reason for this is because people will come up with new inventions that will create more jobs. A clear example of this is the invention of the Internet that brought numerous job opportunities even when computers appeared to be taking over (Kasanoff, 2014)....
