Each culture has its individual history, which also influences how international relations are conducted today. Some contributions are more obvious than others. However, what makes African or African-American contributions to International Relations thought diverse and often contrary to the mainstream is imperialism.
After World War I, Africa became one of the most important areas for imperialistic exploitation and was divided into colonial territories. Colonialism defined Africa and its relations with European countries. Colonialism was an economic system that existed mostly during the 16th to 20th century, which provided a power structure and allowed European countries to expand their territory (Owens, 2018). Great Britain, France, and other European countries were economically dependent on raw materials produced in Africa. This made Africa a major contributor to international relations.
