The author finds schools to play an institutional role aimed at instilling obedience and conformity to people in society. As a result, the education system rewards obedient students that are disciplined, while any dissidents are punished to force them to tow the line. Students learn from a tender age to follow instructions from their teachers without opposition. For instance, Chomsky (2002) highlights his friend’s plight during his education whereby no one cared when he scored a ‘C’ grade in school but the line was drawn when he was three minutes late to class (p. 236).
