Introduction
To create strong states, earlier totalitarian regimes invested hugely to sell governments’ ideologies to the people. Two examples of such regimes are the Nazi regime led by Hitler and the Soviet’s communist regime led by Stalin. In their desire to become economically powerful and industrialize their countries, these regimes invested heavily in research and development a goal that they were able to achieve to a large extent (Traverso, 2017). Coupled with well-designed propaganda, these regimes won the trust of the people concerning the ability of the government to take care of the affairs of the people. For example, besides investing in research and development, Hitler also invested in the Gestapo, a secret police unit charged with the role of identifying and dealing with rebellion (Traverso, 2017).
