You are right Mirian. Most of the theories were found by Freud. He was a positivist thinker and he shaped the field of psychology. Through his theories and models we are able to know which category do we belong to, the positivists who believes in reality the way it is or the relativists who believes that if there is reality it exists in certain contexts. This is essential in the therapist-client relationship and determining the roles of each of them in making the relationship successful. The therapists have to weigh all the possible ways through which the client can accept the reality as it is (Murdock, 2013).

Sims, is true the philosophical difference between the two categories of neonalaytic writers is whether they are positivists like Freud or relativists. Since he was unable to scientifically prove his theories and models, they received many criticisms including from his student and colleague Curl Jung (Carver & Scheier, 2000). Those who criticized him are the relativists and his followers are the positivists. The roles of the client and therapist are shaped by which side each stands.

Vincent, I like your post. The neoanalytic approaches have not added any new techniques to psychoanalytic theories. They only help us to how we can view things from different contexts in search of reality (Murdock, 2013). This is essential for therapists in trying to find out how they can help the client to solve some issues. They should exploit all the possible solutions before choosing a specific action to follow.

Steve, you are right. Reality in relativists depends on the context from which they are viewing it from. For one there might be reality while the other from the same context there might not be reality at all. Both writers help us to realize that there is need to use different approaches in solving an issue with clients. I think despite the positivists knowing the reality, they try to discover it by exploring it independently. They will always reach at the same conclusions unlike the relativists whose conclusions will vary depending on the context ...
