Things Learned and Unlearned in the Field of Urban Studies
We have analyzed the distinctive global challenges facing the field of urban studies in the twenty-first century, including pandemics, urban inequality, and climate change. To understand how these challenges emerged, we studied how particular urban histories of segregation and gentrification have reinforced inequalities of race, class, gender, and indigeneity. In the last part of the course, we have studied the ways in which social movements have articulated visions of more socially and environmentally just cities by calling for climate reparations and policies like the Green New Deal. Global Challenges
One thing I have learned about urban studies is that national and global policies are vital in maintaining the balance in the world and this involves policies like the Green New Deal. The Green New Deal, while based on the United States, is a policy that can help people worldwide. The Green New Deal calls for the reduction of pollutants like greenhouse gas emissions while continually improving the economy by providing more jobs and free or subsidized education in an effort to cultivate individuals and help overcome non-sustainable practices brought by poverty (“Text - H.Res.109 - 116th Congress”, 2020).
In contrast, I have unlearned that racial capitalism issues related to climate change is equated to equality based on popular assertions for equal rights.
