1 Describe the change you experienced or that is currently occurring.
The neighborhood is currently experiencing several redevelopments wherein new business entities are being established as well as the fact that newer residents are coming within the area. It was observed by the author of this paper how the population within this neighborhood has increased dramatically over time. Some “newcomers” of this neighborhood with higher economic statuses make improvements to the old houses and other structures within the neighborhood.
2 Which of the three theories of neighborhood change would it be based upon?
The theory which will most likely apply to the current status of the neighborhood is the theory of invasion-succession. This theory was patterned to how the plants interact with one another and how an organism will be displaced at the expense of the invasion made by a different organism. This analogy can be true within neighborhoods as gentrification occurs. This neighborhood change seems to allow lower-income families to be displaced by the wealthier ones (Schwirian, 1983). This can be a possible result of the developments the neighborhood is currently experiencing. This theory has served as a model for neighborhood change throughout the years and this highly demonstrates that a neighborhood may undergo the following process in chronological order: (1) penetration; (2) invasion; (3) consolidation; (4) pilling up. This stepwise process that may occur in a particular neighborhood will result in various changes ranging from the economy of the area to the racial composition of the neighborhood (Scwirian, 1983). This theory best fits the current situation of this neighborhood and in the present time, the author believes that the area is undergoing the process of invasion.
