Appadurai (1997) replaces the term local with intimacy and solidarity of communal systems. According to him, the world has increasingly become more intimate and united, from complex subsystems to a united system that has multifaceted relationships within it. As a renowned theorist on globalization, Appadurai uses intimacy to present and explore the workings of higher-related systems absorbing lower-level systems. This replaces the earlier ideas of anthography, ethnicity, financials, and cultural differences in globalization. He is able to characterize the term scapes in different subsystems such as technology, finances, media, ideas, and the interconnection of different ethnicities. By using the term intimacy, Appadurai considers the intimacies in ideological worlds, communities, and complex flows of interactions.
By considering localization as intimacy, Appadurai establishes relationships between kin and enemies. One is able to invest in their kin because of the intimate relationship and protect themselves from their enemies. Secondly, intimacy considers gains and losses. Individuals always consider their gains over their losses, determining their following actions. Additionally, human beings treasure goods and services based on their specificity and raw value. The behaviour of humans is based on what value they get from different aspects of the provided products and services. Finally, with intimacy, knowledge can encompass areas not previously explored, such as race, gender, and colonization.
