1 Therapeutic Processes
The three therapeutic factors include disclosure, feedback, and confrontation.
1 Disclosure
Disclosure is important in a group setting because it enables the client to explore him or herself personally. I have chosen disclosure as a therapeutic factor because it is a phenomenon that is mostly misunderstood by people. Here disclosure does not mean telling each and everything about oneself to the group members. There are guidelines that are provided by the therapist in the first session that reflects on self-disclosure. In self-disclosure, participants are asked not to tell their private information. If anyone does so unconsciously, other members are asked to maintain confidentiality. Since it is obvious that in every group, the discussion does not remain within a group. So, it is better for members not to share their private information. Instead, they reflect on their feelings, thoughts, and emotions while reflecting on their experiences (Corey, Corey & Corey, 2013)
2 Feedback
Feedback is one of the most powerful tools in a group setting. It provides with information and increases the ability, strength and power of collective feedback. I chose feedback for the therapeutic process because it enables the participants to compare their own perceptions with other's feedback. If feedback is positive, there are chances that the motivation of a member increases. However, it depends on the members on how to take this information in their lives (Corey, Corey & Corey, 2013)
3 Confrontation
Confrontation can be both caring and aggressive in nature. It depends on the member how they confront others in the group. It is the responsibility of the leader to avoid psychological harm to the members. It can only be done by limiting or avoiding assaultive verbal confrontation. Leaders in a group can model the way of the use of confrontation. The model way includes avoidance of judgmental remarks to others and focuses on positive behaviours. Therefore, destructive confrontation can harm others while constructive confrontation can motivate others to speak and share issues with other members (Corey, Corey & Corey, 2013).
2 Expression of Feelings
In a group setting, other group members provide an opportunity to express their feelings. By doing so, the member talks about certain events that might have affected him. This expression of feelings facilitates the healing process. Moreover, such members are more likely to express those feelings that they have previously kept to themselves. In my course group project, if one of the members discusses that she feels sad and lonely when her parents fight with each other. She further added I cannot live without them, but I hate them when they fight. On the other hand, When they show love and care for me, I have a feeling of guilt for hating them. After listening to her, as a leader, I will clarify to her that you are having both feelings of love and anger towards them. Having both feelings at a time is creating a problem for you. Helping her to sort out the feelings so that she would not have a feeling of guilt in her future life.
