Introduction
According to Isvan (2019), a license is a legal authority granted by a state to personals practicing within a defined scope of practice (SOP). In this regard, certification represents the educational and professional competencies required for an individual to be licensed within the defined SOP. In California, four primary levels of certification are required for actual certification and licensure for professionals venturing into substance abuse SOP (HSE, n.d.). Among the four, the current paper discusses the Substance Use Disorder Certified Counsellor (SUDCC) offered by the California Association of DUI Treatment (CADTP). The discussion focuses on several credits, core courses, hours of training, internship, and supervision, and a section on a biblical worldview.
State of Substance Abuse in California and Relevance of SUDCC
In California, 50% of people over the age of 12 reported use of alcohol in the past month. A further 20% reported using Marijuana in the past year (Valentine & Brassil, 2022). Despite these figures, only 10% of people who said SUD in the past year had access to treatment amidst soaring overdose deaths from amphetamines, psychostimulants, and opioids. Consequently, AC (2023) states that the demand for counselors in California will grow by 18% between 2014 and 2024. Some of these professionals are those who pursue the SUDCC certification. In other words, working in California as a substance and abuse counselor is professionally and personally rewarding, given the current state trends.
About SUDCC
Those interested in pursuing SUDCC must sign a statement that binds them to an educational and professional code of ethics. As part of the registration process, they must complete an orientation course that last nine hours. Once the orientation course is completed successfully, registrants must undergo five years of training.
