1b) Cognitive-behavioral theory- this approach to counseling was formulated about three decades ago and combines two approaches to counseling a person. The cognitive approach that focuses on the ideas, beliefs and thoughts of an individual and how they can trigger certain feelings to the person. The behavioral approach that focuses on the behavior of the patient. It discovers harmful behaviors and explains why they occur and how they can be altered (Hupp et al. 2008). The cognitive-behavioral approach to counseling enables the counselors to help the patients to manage their problems by enabling them to recognize and change the way they behave and how their thoughts and actions influence one another.
c) Reality Therapy- this theory has been used since the 1960s when it was formulated by Dr. William Glasser in the USA. Many belief that it only gives people "a dose of reality" but it is more of "people-friendly and people-centered". It enables the counselors to help the patients realize their basic needs and how they can effectively meet them (Wubbolding, 2007). In the process of helping the patients how they can meet their needs, they are taken through the "control" process that one has to take control of some things to meet the needs. The counselors take the clients to the past to cover what needs to be learned about the past and move fast to empower them to realize their needs and wants at present and the future.
2. b) HIPAA/Confidentiality- Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act provides the patients with privacy rights and protections regarding their health information and other important controls like how their health information and conditions will be disclosed by the practitioners. Professional counselors are expected to keep the information they obtain from the clients confidential. This is important especially in the information that is confidential and needs not to be disclosed to any other third party (Cuttone and Tarvydas, 2007). This trend ensures that there is the strong privacy of the information of the client creating individual trust between the counselor and the client. The trend provides the information that needs to be disclosed to those who are involved.
