For quite some time now, there have been some tension brewing with reference to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. This is an item that has been played out on the national television for the better part of 2016 (Thorbecke, 2016). This is an issue that is both cultural and political and brings to the light the struggles of the Native Americans. It further points to the human rights issues that plague the American society, where the minority are discriminated against.
Starting out in January, the issue came up when the Dakota Access announced that they had been licensed and given permit approval by the North Dakota Public Service Commission, to build a crude oil pipeline (Richardson, 2016). This was immediately followed by the attorneys of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribefiling legal action against the pipeline. The pipeline is one of the projects which are going to demean the culture of the people in the region, relative to the fact that the line is supposed to pass through some of the grounds that are considered sacred.
Some of the recent developments include the fact that the former president, Obama, hosted some 500 Native American leaders. The leaders came to the eighth and final conference at the white house on the 26th of September in 2016. In his speech he tried to make the leaders feel welcome and understood with reference to their plight related to pipeline and the cultural lands (Richardson, 2016). One of the latest developments includes the 9th October 2016, where federal appeal courts denied the tribes appeal.
