Throughout each chapter of the text the authors have discussed the “matrix of race,” also known as the concept of intersectionality, which refers to the interconnected nature of our social identities, such as our race, class, gender, sexuality, etcetera. Together, our identities can create overlapping and interrelated systems of discrimination, disadvantage, and/or privilege. Many of us also have some identities that are disadvantaged and some that provide privileges.
For this journal, you will examine the sociological concepts of intersectionality, privilege, and oppression and trace the complexity of your own social identities related to these concepts.
Please review the resources What Is White Privilege, Really? Recognizing White Privilege Begins With Truly Understanding the Term Itself (Links to an external site.)and What Is Privilege? (Links to an external site.) and then answer the following questions below in a three- to four-page reflection:
Using the “matrix of race” framework presented throughout the text, how would you describe your own social identities?
Provide examples of your identities that provide you a relative privilege in society and those that cause a relative disadvantage.
Provide an example of a societal stereotype based on your race and/or ethnicity. Explain how you would feel if someone assumed this stereotype about you without meeting you. Do you feel that you have ever been racially profiled? If yes, in what way? If no, why do you think you have not experienced this?
There are some identities in society that provide a certain level of status to the people who embody them. In some communities, for example, becoming a professional athlete or being in the entertainment industry (i.e., musician) may be seen as “ways out.” Do you believe an identity, such as a professional athlete, lessons the likelihood of individuals experiencing racism and racial profiling? Please explain your answer in detail.

Description of My Identities Based on Intersectionality, Privilege, and Oppression
Intersectionality refers to the framework of conceptualization of an individual, group of persons, or social problem that impact numerous disadvantages and discriminations. Intersectionality considers people's overlapping experiences and identities to comprehend the complexity of prejudices. The intersectional sociology model asserts that individuals are disadvantaged by numerous forms of oppression, including sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, class, and other identity issues (Carastathis, 2019, p. 304). Intersectionality is utilized to indicate there are many aspects in life that affect one's life, such that discriminating against one another due to a particular factor may expose one to more disadvantages of oppression. For instance, discriminating against women due to gender by the males poses the males to experience biases on sexual orientation, class, race, and religion. Therefore, intersectionality is related to my life because I need to identify myself with gender, a particular religion, race, and class. These aspects reveal that I should respect other people's social identities because no identity is superior to others.
Privilege refers to an individual not experiencing disadvantages or discrimination due to their particular social identity. White privilege has been highly utilized in various contexts to mean whites are experiencing multiple favors due to their skin color. The concept of white privilege has led to the emergence of "black lives matter," which attempts to convince the whites that the darker-skinned people are human beings and, therefore, should not be exposed to discrimination (Monahan, 2018, p. 75). However, the privilege does not apply to skin color only because sexuality, gender, and class matter. The concept of privilege applies to me because I possess various social identities that can expose me to advantages or disadvantages. For instance, in the concept of sexual orientation, if I identify myself with homosexuality, the heterosexual individuals may discriminate against me. Therefore, I need to be conscious and sensitive toward aspects attributed to privilege and ensure that I use my privileges to make others happy.
The third concept of social identity is oppression which refers to a specific unfair treatment attributed to a particular group and originates from a complex network of social beliefs and restrictions, including laws and institutions that implicit stereotypes and biases. Oppression disadvantages individuals based on sexual orientations, gender, class, ethnicity, and religion (Cory, 2018). For instance, males are believed to discriminate against women...
