Importance of Refugee Health Partnership
Refugee Health Partnership is an association between Schools of Social Work, Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Program, Office of Global Social Work, Dignity Health’s St. Joseph’s Medical Center and International Rescue Committee’s Refugee Resettlement Program. Below are some of the benefits of RHP to a medical student (Bosson & Carrico, 2017)
• Students learn how to understand the patient’s perspective: As the students interact with the refugees who need medical attention, they can understand their views and know-how to address their problems.
• Medical and social students learn how to communicate with patients from different cultures and also overcome the language barrier. They are exposed to people from different cultures and become learn how to work together with medical interpreters.
• It helps students learn how to examine the role played by social determinants of health.
Reasons why students should apply for Refugee Health Program
Training: students are trained on how to deal with refugees who need medical attention. They are trained to practice conscious care and refugee care. Students develop skills that help them deal with refugees who might need guidance rather than medical attention. They learn how to handle behavioral health to survivors of torture. They also get a chance to attend seminars facilitated by an RHP.
To gain professional experience: Refugee Health Program pairs students into teams with refugees who need special health care attention. By doing this, they give students a platform to apply knowledge learned in class on how to interact with patients....
