Social work is essential in helping individuals dealing with traumatic experiences. Although the patients may get help from other health care professionals, social workers help them better since they are well equipped with knowledge on various social issues such as culture and would consider them desirably during the therapy sessions. Also, they understand that different patients are impacted differently by traumatic events, and what could be highly detrimental to a person may hardly affect another individual. Knowing that the patients have different cultural origins and reactions to the traumatic experiences raises the need for social workers’ intervention in the treatment environment to ensure they are treated as desired. It is significant for social workers to understand that different patients with traumatic experiences require varying types of care considering aspects such as their cultural origin to ensure effective intervention to the issue.
Young, middle, and older adults experience various traumatic events in the life cycle. Thus, social workers may need to input significant interventions to help people cope with the issues and become resilient, considering the experiences (Straussner & Calnan, 2014). I believe that some traumatic experiences may require more intervention besides the standard medical procedures, and it is the task of social workers. However, workers should understand that all patients originate from different cultures, and some may be culturally sensitive (Panos & Panos, 2000). Although the healthcare setting might have implemented a specific model alienated to take care of all patients considering their cultural beliefs, social workers must ensure that their close interaction with patients does not compromise their living. They must help patients dealing with traumatic experiences while still considering their beliefs.
Research by Straussner & Calnan (2014) shows that trauma may persist for an extended period, causing a significant psychological toll on the affected individuals. Although people may think that the impact of trauma is subject to the cause and resilience before recovery, the issue depends on various individuals considering their relationship with the event. Thus, social workers ought to understand that trauma and its impacts are different between multiple individuals. Therefore, what might be traumatizing and potentially life-shattering to a particular person could have minimal implications for another individual (Straussner & Calnan, 2014).
