Cultural Terms
* Cultural awareness- the art of being sensitive and open to the similarities and differences between two different cultures
* Cultural knowledge- the state of knowing about some cultural characteristics of another ethnic group. Some of these characteristics include history, values, beliefs, and behaviors.
* Cultural skill- an individual’s ability to successfully interact, work, and develop healthy relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds.
* Cultural encounter- the interaction of two different cultures.
* Cultural desire- the motivation of a nurse to participate in learning how to become culturally aware, knowledgeable, and competent, which subsequently leads to healthy cultural encounters.
* Ethnocentrism- applying an individual’s culture or ethnicity as a standard rule for judging other people, cultures, behaviors, and practices instead of using the required cultural standards.
* Stereotyping- the generalization of beliefs about a particular group of people.
* Prejudice- the state of having a biased opinion about a person or item that is not backed by any facts or specific experience.
* Racism- the belief that a particular group community is superior than another because of their skin color.
