Guidelines for Reading Responses What is a Reading Response? A Reading Response is a two-page paper in which you reflect on an article assigned on your Course Calendar. Each Reading Response should follow the specific format that is attached to these guidelines. Six (6) Reading Responses are due over the course of the semester. You may choose which of the assigned articles you respond to. There are nineteen (19) possible articles over the course of the semester. When are the Reading Responses due?

• Your Reading Response must be submitted at the beginning of class on the day the article is to be discussed. (In other words, it must be submitted BEFORE we discuss the article as a group). I will accept Reading Responses early but NOT late.

• You may turn in multiple Reading Responses on a single day, as long as we have not already discussed those articles in class. How many points are the Reading Responses worth? Each Reading Response is worth fifteen (15) points. In total, the six Reading Responses are worth 90 points or 22% of your semester grade. Summary of article’s main points 4 points Compelling passage within article 1 point Connection to course terms & concepts 4 points Personal reflection on article 4 points Grammar, punctuation, and writing skills 2 points TOTAL 15 points How should the Reading Responses be formatted? Each Reading Response should follow the specific format shown on the following page.

• 1.5–2 pages in length • Single-spaced (as shown on template)

• 1-inch margins

• Times New Roman or Cambria font, size 12

Your Name Date Reading Response #1, 2, 3, etc. “Title of Article” Author Name Article Summary Here you will write a paragraph summarizing the author’s main points in the article. You should show that you read the article in its entirety and understand the key arguments the author is making.

What are the main takeaways from the article? Compelling Passage Here you will re-write a brief passage within the article that you found compelling. What sentences or short paragraph really stood out to you? Please include the passage in quotes, along with the page number where you found it.

You can simply re-write the passage; you do not need to provide commentary or reflection in this section. Connection to Course Terms and Concepts Here you will draw out specific terms and concepts—discussed in your book, in my PowerPoint, or both—that relate to the article. Aim for two or three terms/concepts per article. Look through the book chapter and/or my lecture presentations to see which sections or slides help you better understand the article. Write the terms/concepts out here, along with their definitions or a brief explanation of what they mean. Then in a sentence or two explain why they relate to the article. Personal Reflection Here you will share your personal response to the article in 1-2 long paragraphs. You can discuss any aspect of the article you found interesting. If you’re stuck, consider these questions: - What part(s) of the article do you agree with? Why? - What part(s) of the article do you disagree with? Why? - How can you relate the article to your personal experience? - How can you relate the article to other classes you’re taking or to your chosen major/career field? - Is there anything you’ll do differently (in your personal life, in your job, etc.) after reading this article?

Then again, women, concludes Steinhauer, still have long way to go and to decide independently to run for elections in harder election opportunities, particularly for Congress and city mayorships.
II. Compelling Passage
