The Elderly in Society
As people continue to age, it becomes essential to understand and address their challenges. This paper will explore some of the physical, psychological and social needs that older adults face daily in Singapore. Additionally, it will explore the five common challenges the elderly encounter in society, supported by case examples.
Needs of the Elderly
Physical, Psychological, and Social Needs of the Elderly
One physical need the elderly encounter is the need for proper health care. Older people often have specific healthcare that needs immediate intervention. Regular check-ups, medication management, and access to specialized healthcare professionals are crucial in ensuring the well-being of an elderly individual in society (Walker, 2022). Home healthcare services such as administering medication and monitoring health conditions help with daily activities. For example, Mrs. Johnson, an 80-year-old widow with diabetes, requires regular visits from a nurse to administer her insulin and monitor her blood sugar levels.
Self-esteem and dignity are crucial psychological needs for older people, as they directly impact their overall well-being and quality of life. Society can boost older adults’ self-esteem and dignity by respecting and valuing them. Older people need to feel respected and valued as individuals with a wealth of life experience and wisdom. Being treated with respect acknowledges their worth and affirms their place in society. Maintaining high levels of self-esteem among older adults may involve listening to their opinions, involving them in decision-making processes that affect them, and considering their preferences and choices (Cameron & Gransger, 2020). Respect and value contribute to self-worth and belonging, promoting positive self-esteem. For instance, Mr. Philip, an 86-year-old man with depression, talks to a psychotherapist weekly to assist him find and change his disturbing emotions.
Social interaction as a social need is also essential in the life of older individuals. Facilitating opportunities for social interaction, such as group activities, clubs, or senior centres, can help combat loneliness and foster a sense of belonging (Plothner et al., 2019). For example, Ms. Martinez, a 78-year-old woman, regularly attends a senior exercise class where she improves her physical health and enjoys the friendships, she makes with other class members.
Other Important Needs of the Elderly
Other additional needs include safety and security for older people. Safety features like handrails, non-slip mats, adequate lighting, and regular check-ups can help prevent accidents and promote security (Indarwati et al., 2023). For instance, Mrs. Smith, a Singaporean 88-year-old with mobility issues, benefits from home safety modifications needed to prevent falls, such as adding grab bars in the bathroom. Mobility is also crucial for older people to access healthcare, social activities, and community resources. Whether through public transportation, volunteer drivers, or specialized senior transportation programs, providing transportation serv...
