Biological systems operate via a series of inputs and outputs into the system, whether that be nutrients, water, energy, etc. A feedback loop is an occurrence wherein the output within a system amplifies or inhibits another component of that system. It is important that you understand feedback loops because they allow organisms to maintain homeostasis or prevent organisms from doing so. For this assignment:
You will choose a simple feedback loop of your own creation to illustrate major characteristics. It can be any component of an ecosystem that you can think of. There should be at least five inputs/outputs to your feedback loop.
You will then explain how these characteristics interact. You need to indicate if you have a positive or negative feedback loop and discuss at least two scenarios of what would happen if an input or output were missing or if it were added.
Examples:
Apple Ripening: Positive feedback loop (with five inputs/outputs)
Apple ripens on trees > ripened fruit produces ethylene > ethylene signals neighboring fruit to ripen > neighbors produce more ethylene > more apples ripen.
Weather Feedback: Negative feedback loop (with six inputs/outputs)
Air temperature rises > water evaporates > cloud formation > more albedo from increased clouds > more light reflected away from Earth off clouds > Earth cooling

Feedback loops are mechanisms commonly observed in the biological sciences because of how it demonstrates the interactions of different organisms with the environment (Positive and Negative Feedback Loops in Biology, 2020). It can also occur on different magnitudes and be observed directly or indirectly. For example, feedback loops can be observed from an ecosystem level to a microscopic and chemical level, such as in human body systems’ mechanisms for homeostasis (El-Samad, 2021). There are two types of feedback loops: the positive feedback loop and the negative feedback loop. This paper will provide examples of both types of feedback loops and explain their significance and implications if at least one input or output is missing.
Example of a Positive Feedback Loop
An example of a positive feedback loop is the simple reproduction process in a population. From a bigger picture perspective, and not considering any sub-processes involved, the reproduction of a proliferate species follows the loop:
Rabbits are born > Rabbits grow > Rabbits reach their reproductive stage > Rabbits Reproduce > More rabbits are born
With this mechanism, the initial population of the rabbits from a specific, observed generation enters the positive feedback loop mechanism when they are born. Since rabbits multiply plentily, each individual entering this process gives birth to at least one more rabbit, creating more rabbits, hence the positive feedback loop. If, for example, one of the inputs is removed, the population would still grow because of the sheer number of individuals undergoing the loop. However, on a single individual observation, if, for example, the rabbits do not grow due to predation, all succeeding generations will not be produced because the prospective parents would be dead. In another example, if the rabbits do not reproduce in a scenario where they are isolated (e.g., taken from their population and sold in a pet store to become a non-reproducing, solitary pet in a family), this individual will not produce more offspring, hence arresting the effects of th...
