The Standard Prison Experiment was a 1971 study conducted by Philip Zimbardo on a group of college students to determine if the brutality reported among guards in American prisons was the consequence of their sadistic personalities or because of the prison environment. Although the Standard Prison Experiment became a staple in articles, textbooks, and psychology classes, it has recently attracted widespread criticism for its gross violation of research ethics. This essay will analyze using the American Political Science Association (APSA) codes of ethics. The main ethical problem in the experiment relates to APSA’s principles regarding research on human subjects: political scientists are obliged to consider the possible risks to human subjects when conducting studies (APSA, 2012).
