Essay Instructions:

Module 3 is an Argumentative essay in which the writer takes a stance on a topical issue and provides three or more supporting points as support. http://www(dot)cbsnews(dot)com/videos/freeman-on-black-history/ After viewing the CBS 60 minutes video, "Freeman on Black History," write a well-organized and well-supported essay, in which you state whether you are for or against a Black History month in the United States. Your essay must include three to five reasons to support your point of view/thesis. ***Keep in mind I am black and I agree with Morgan Freeman*** A well-organized essay has a beginning, middle, and an end. The beginning, or introduction, should include an opening sentence to grab your reader’s attention. Follow the opening sentence with a brief background on the topic or situation. It is not necessary to reference Freeman or the CBS clip in any way. In this case, one might include a brief background on the history of Black History month in the United States. The last sentence of the introduction is the thesis statement. The thesis states the main point of the essay, which in this case, would be a statement affirming your point of view as to whether or not there should be a Black History month in the United States. A well-supported essay includes supporting points, details, and examples. For this essay, you must decide the best way to organize the body of the paper. Will you have a paragraph for each supporting reason? Will you divide the body of your paper into three or five paragraphs, one for each point? In any case, each body paragraph must support (explain) your reasoning (rationale) using specific details. Each body paragraph must have a topic sentence that states the main point of the paragraph. The conclusion typically summarizes the main points of the essay and/or closes with a lasting impression that connects the reader to their world. Who would make such a decision and what might be the possible repercussions? Papers must be double-spaced in Times or Times New Roman font (12 cpi) with standard one-inch margins. The first person "I" is not used in a formal essay, nor is the passive "you." In place of "you," "one" may be used. No secondary sources are to be used in the process of writing this first paper; it is to be entirely written based on one's point of view and supported with body points and details. •Write an essay (no less than three pages in length) that states an original thesis statement on Black History month. •Include an introductory paragraph with thesis statement. •Include body paragraphs (each with a topic sentence that states the point of the paragraph) that support the thesis through examples and details. •Include a conclusion that summarizes the main points of the essay and/or leaves the reader with a lasting impression on the issue.

Is Observing Black History Month Beneficial?
The United States has endeavored to fight racism over decades, but its effects are yet felt within the larger American society. Although the US is referred to as the land of the free and the brave, the differences in skin color and culture have become an obstacle in uniting Americans under one umbrella of humanity, where the worthiness of a man is determined by neither his skin color nor culture, but his values. Americans have failed to acknowledge their differences with an understanding that despite their differences in skin color, hair color, or culture among other differences, they are all equal when it comes down to humanity. This is the reason majority of the blacks have found the Black History Month relevant because to some; it helps them experience a sense of belonging. The Month of February is a Black History Month in the United States. February is associated with the birthdays of Presidents Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, who are considered icons of freedom and equity among blacks and whites. This essay seeks to support the observance of the black history as a fundamental continuous experience and history among all Americans, both blacks and whites. Consequently, without history on backs, some aspects of American history will be obsolete.
It is ridiculous relegating one of the core components of the American history to just one Month. The act of regulating the history of blacks in the Unites States into a single Month, in itself, propagates the feelings of helplessness and segregation among the blacks who have endured discrimination and segregation for many decades. Every aspect of American history is linked with blacks and other immigrant communities. For instance, even as early as 1800s, the blacks were the immediate causalities of slavery and slave trade; an outcome of America’s Westward Expansion. This was pote...
