Indigeneity refers to the act of being first in a place. On the other hand, decolonization refers to the action of a state withdrawing itself from a colony. Decolonization leads to the independence of the indigenous people. That brings upon the relationship that exists between indigeneity and decolonization. It refers to the act of the native people been left independent to decide for their land. Indigeneity and decolonization will be discussed with the film 'the canary effect,' and the article' decolonization is not a metaphor.' The two documents will be useful in discussing the issues at hand.
The canary effect is a documentary film that analyzes the impact that the U.S has had on the Native Americans. The results revolve around the policies that have been formulated on the issue. The movie was directed by the Yellow Thunder woman and Robin Davey. The documentary is influential because it offers a horrifying and fresh perspective on the abuses that were denounced against the Native Americans—the views related to both the contemporary and historical society. From the documentary, the treatment of the Native Americans can be compared to a genocide definition. The treatment suits the definition of genocide because of factors such as killings sanctioned by the government (Goeman, & Denetdale, 2009). The United States government approved the killing of Native Americans.
The children of the Native Americans were forced to change their native identity and embrace the colonizers' culture and identity. There were issues of sterilization of women and funding that were inadequate for the reservations. The different policies played a critical role in the demoralization of the Native Americans' population. Even after decolonization, the Native Americans are treated differently. The natives are associated with high rates of suicide, drug abuse, and depression. The natives engage in such activities because of how the other members still treat them of society. The canary effect film is important because it brings awareness to the underlying issues in society. The film is also beneficial in challenging people to confront the inferior treatment issued to them by governments and their neighbors because they come from an inadequate community/ background. People in society should be treated well regardless of their background or other societal issues.
